WHAT'S HAPPENING TRADING UP TO TULSA continued...
Festival Israel 2009
Camel rides, the Tulsa Klezmer Band, Israeli food and much more are all part of Festival Israel. This annual event brings nearly 1,500 Tulsans of all backgrounds together to celebrate Israel Independence Day.

... an insane commute (here it’s 20 minutes tops, anywhere in the metro) and outrageous housing prices. The city’s latest campaign is, “Give yourself a raise, move to Tulsa” and it’s true. A recent Money Magazine study puts the average home price at $109,000. Think of what you can get if you spend anywhere near what it costs to live on the coast.

These are tough times economically, but I have to say we are lucky in Tulsa. The employment picture is better by far than the rest of the nation. Our strongest industries are aerospace, energy and telecommunications, but with Oklahoma’s lower than average cost of doing business, a variety of companies are choosing Tulsa.

For continuing education, you certainly don’t have to worry about paying out of state tuition. Tulsa has many college opportunities—from a free education at the community college level for local high school grads, to nationally ranked law and medical schools. (University of Tulsa Law School and OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine- not to mention the new OU School of Community Medicine just opening).

You may have heard this is “the buckle” of the bible belt. There is some truth to that, but our community enjoys widespread non-Jewish support of Israel and other Jewish causes. Community members are active in a number of interfaith activities to promote diversity and understanding.

There’s a sense that it’s just a bit more special being Jewish in Tulsa. We tend to have a higher rate of involvement and synagogue attendance than cities with much larger Jewish communities.

I must confess, I hadn’t heard much about Tulsa before I moved here and certainly had no idea how much this community has to offer. That’s exactly why we’re trying to let more people know what’s going on. Come join us and see for yourself!
